Finances are often a deciding factor in choosing a four-year college. The key to receiving the best financial aid package is maintain strong grade point average (above 3.0), apply early to colleges and identify scholarships available through sources other than colleges.
Do not eliminate private colleges simply because you believe they are too expensive. They can often provide additional funding above TAP and Pell to qualified students. Many colleges offer scholarships to students in NCCC’s Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society.

Have I filled out and mailed the necessary application and financial aid forms? Have I included fees, if necessary?
If you are a New York State resident and graduating from NCCC, you are allowed a maximum of four fee waivers; a fee is charged for each additional application thereafter. Private colleges will require a fee to apply - but this can sometimes be waived for financial reasons. This needs to be checked out with the financial aid office of the college to which you are applying.
Have I arranged for academic and financial aid transcripts to be sent to each school where I am applying?
You need to have an official college transcript sent to each college to which you apply, from each college you have attended. There is a fee for this service. Arrangements can be made at the Registrar's Office in Hodson Hall or see your campus counselor.
To attain a transcript from another college you view the request procedures online. A formal signature is require to forward requests. Most admission decisions are based on three semester's of grades. You can arrange for transcripts to be sent at anytime during your third semester. If you only have one or two semesters of college behind you, be prepared to send a high school or GED transcript.

Early applications will enhance your opportunities for financial aid and selection of courses and on-campus housing.
Am I aware of the course and grade requirements for the program and college to which I am applying?
Many transfer programs have specific course requirements to be taken during your first two years. The more popular majors frequently require a higher grade point average to be admitted. Also, some majors require a supplemental application into the major or, as in the case of art or architecture, a portfolio of your work. Your Office of Campus and Student Life can help you obtain this information. Also, your advisor may be familiar with specific transfer program requirements
Have I reviewed my last year of coursework at NCCC with my advisor or a counselor to be sure I've met admission requirements at the four-year college?
Once you have fulfilled your specific program requirements at NCCC, you may have elective credits available to finish your Associate's degree. This is a good opportunity to pick courses that also fulfill requirements at the four-year college. Check with both the transfer college and with your advisor or a NCCC Office of Campus and Student Life to be certain you are choosing courses that will meet program requirements.
