Oct. 3, 2024

SARANAC LAKE -- The college is partnering with the state Department of Labor and SUNY to help stem the staffing crisis for businesses and give employees the skills and training they need to grow their careers through the Registered Apprenticeship Program.

Specifics of the program were outlined Tuesday, Oct. 1, at a Human Services Industry Roundtable on the college’s Saranac LakeA speaker stands at the front of a classroom with people sitting in desks campus. The gathering was attended by more than two dozen people representing area employers and agencies, primarily in the Human Services fields, as well as state Assemblyman Billy Jones and Franklin County Legislator Greg Janisewski.

Representatives of the Department of Labor, SUNY and the college outlined the benefits of the Registered Apprenticeship Program for both employers and workers.

The program is a structured training opportunity where individuals, called apprentices, receive hands-on experience and educational instruction to learn a particular occupation, trade, or skill. For employers, Registered Apprenticeship programs can provide training for new talent that’s tailored to specific needs, fostering a skilled workforce, and boosting productivity. Apprentices benefit from gaining practical skills, recognized certifications, and opportunities for career advancement and higher wages.

Funding is available through SUNY to pay tuition for students in the Registered Apprenticeship Program.
