New North Country Live series set for Saranac Lake

A flyer describing North Country Live programsSARANAC LAKE – North Country Community College is inviting the public to a series of free, in-person programs this fall on topics ranging from Adirondack history to media literacy to artificial intelligence.

North Country Live returns for five dates in September and October on the college’s Saranac Lake campus, and one additional presentation at the Saranac Lake Free Library that will be part of the final Third Thursday Art Walk of the season. 

“The goal of North Country Live is to present programs that foster intellectual exploration, spark conversation and enrich our communities,” said college President Joe Keegan. “We’re excited to offer a series of programs that showcase our talented faculty as well as a group of outside speakers who bring a wealth of knowledge and expertise in their field. We think this new, in-person edition of North Country Live will be well-received by the community, as well as our students, faculty and staff.”

The schedule for North Country Live is as follows:

  • Thursday, Sept. 5, 7 pmThe Tank is Filled with Hundred-Proof: Stories of Bootlegging in the Adirondacks. Presenter: NCCC faculty member Tom McGrath. Location: S-19, Mulholland Hall, NCCC-Saranac Lake.
  • Thursday, Sept. 12, 7 pm – The Farmer and the Sailor: The Real Story of John Brown, Richard Henry Dana and an Adirondack Meeting. Presenter: NCCC faculty member Pete Nelson. Location: S-19, Mulholland Hall, NCCC-Saranac Lake.
  • Thursday, Sept. 19, 7 pm – Dead Trees Will Show You the Way: Echoes from the Underground Railroad. Presenter: NCCC faculty member Tom McGrath. Location: Saranac Lake Free Library (Third Thursday Art Walk).
  • Tuesday, Sept. 24, 7 pm – Seeking Truth in a Fake News World. Presenter: Mary Miller, New York Newspapers Foundation. Location: S-19, Mulholland Hall, NCCC-Saranac Lake.
  • Thursday, Oct. 3, 7 pm – Can Political Reform Defeat Political Dread? Presenter: Dr. Pete Suttmeier, NCCC Board of Trustees chairman. Location: S-19, Mulholland Hall, NCCC-Saranac Lake.
  • Thursday, Oct. 24, 7 pm – The Impact of New and Emerging Technologies on the Workplace. Presenter: Dr. Bill Daggett, founder, International Center for Leadership in Education. Location: S-19, Mulholland Hall, NCCC-Saranac Lake.

The college launched North Country Live at the outset of the Covid-19 pandemic in the spring of 2020. Over three years, the series featured more than 30 programs, all on Zoom, on a range of topics including the arts, wellness, history, climate change, and more. The college re-launched North Country Live this summer as an in-person series with four programs presented at our Ticonderoga campus.
