College Mourns Passing of Nursing Faculty Member

SARANAC LAKE -- The college is deeply saddened to announce the passing of one of its faculty members. Richard Davenport, a nursing instructor based at our Malone campus, died unexpectedly on Saturday, Oct. 21, 2023.
A 1998 graduate of the college’s nursing program, Richard started working for the college in 2021 as an adjunct nursing instructor. He became a full-time employee in the fall of 2022.
In addition to his work at the college, Richard was a registered nurse at Alice Hyde Medical Center and at several correctional facilities in the Malone area. He was also active in his community, as a firefighter, Cub Scout leader, and amateur radio operator.
“Rich was an incredible instructor and instrumental in helping many nursing students achieve their goals, both in the classroom and during their clinical rotations,” said Sarah Maroun, North Country’s interim vice president for academic affairs. “He was an integral part of our nursing faculty team.”
“Professor Davenport was a dedicated instructor and experienced nurse who was committed to this program” added Tana Hare, director of the college’s nursing program.
The college canceled nursing classes on Monday and, in their place, set aside time for students in Richard’s classes to come together on the Malone campus. Counseling services have been made available to students and faculty, and the college is working to determine who will take over Richard’s classes this semester.
“We are being diligent in making sure our students have the resources and support they need,” Hare said.
“There will be long days ahead for Richard’s students and colleagues,” said college President Joe Keegan, “but there is an assurance and comfort that comes with knowing that together we will get through the loss and support our students and one another.”
