Credit for Prior Learning

Students who earn a degree from North Country Community College must complete a minimum of 50% of the coursework for the degree at North Country CC.  Admitted students may also earn credits through transfer, examination, articulation agreement, and evaluation of military, technical, professional, and/or life experiences (also known as credit for prior learning (CPL).

  • The Vice President for Academic Affairs, in collaboration with department faculty and the Registrar, is responsible for evaluation and awarding credit.
  • Credit earned will be recorded on the North Country CC transcript as degree hours earned, but the grade earned will not be recorded on the transcript or used in computing the student’s grade point average.
  • The grade on the transcript will denote the type of credit earned.
  • Credit will only be granted to students who have been admitted to the college and for applicable coursework in the certificate or degree program in which they are enrolled.
  • If the credit awarded requires evaluation by faculty, a fee may be applied. Examples include challenge exams, portfolio review, or non-standardized industry credentials.

Students transferring from another accredited college or university may submit official transcripts from all the schools they attended prior to NCCC for review. Those transfer students wishing to receive credit for courses from other colleges must have earned a “C “or better; courses where the student earned either a “P” or “F” will not accepted as transfer credits. The maximum number of credits transferable is further limited by college policy. For programs outside of Allied Health, no more than 31 credit hours can be transferred to NCCC toward an Associate’s degree and no more than 15 credit hours towards a Certificate.

For Allied Health programs, a maximum of 17 credits can be transferred into the Certificate: Practical Nursing; a maximum of 33 credits may be transferred into the AAS: Nursing (ADN, RN); and a maximum of 34 credits may be transferred into the AAS: Radiologic Technology. For all students transferring in credits, grades and quality points for courses transferred into NCCC will not appear on the transcript and will not be used in calculating the grade point average at NCCC. NCCC may grant course credit for passing, at an acceptable level, examinations administered under the Advanced Placement Program (APP), the College Level Examination Program (CLEP), and the New York State Proficiency Examinations. The College does not accept clinical experience or credits from other institutions to satisfy certificate, degree, clinical or internship graduation requirements.

To qualify for transfer, credits must be less than ten years old. Credits taken at NCCC, where matriculation has been broken, will also be subject to the ten-year rule. To qualify for transfer into Allied Health, credits must be less than five years old.

Students who take credits from non-collegiate sites must request official transcripts and submit to the Registrar’s Office.  Credit for courses will be evaluated based on recommendations from the American Council on Education (ACE).  Additional documentation may be required for transfer credit to be awarded.

Students seeking transfer credit from colleges or universities located outside of the United States should utilize a fee-based credentialing service that verifies the authenticity of the foreign transcript, and both translates and evaluates the document. Evaluation should include both course name and the number of credit hours earned. In some cases, students may be requested to provide course descriptions and/or syllabi that have been translated into English before NCCC will award transfer credit. The student is responsible for all the above. NCCC recommends using World Education Services (WES) https://www.wes.org/.

World Education Services helps immigrants, refugees, and international students achieve their goals in the U.S. and Canada with trusted credential evaluations and advocacy on behalf of global talent.

Advanced Placement (AP) Exam
NCCC recognizes the College Board’s Advanced Placement (AP) exams and awards credit for successful completion of AP exams in the same manner that transfer credits are awarded with a grade of 3,4, or 5.

College Level Examination Program (CLEP)
NCCC recognizes credit earned through testing by the College Level Examination Program (CLEP). Credit is awarded for successful completion of CLEP tests in the same manner that transfer credits are awarded with a grade of 50 or higher.

International Baccalaureate (IB)
NCCC will award credit for IB Diploma courses on either the Standard Level (SL) or High Level (HL), with a grade of 4 or higher.

Challenge exams may be requested for certain courses.  These exams test a student's knowledge of the main outcomes for the course and assess similar content as a final exam or final project.

Students may receive transfer credit for courses evaluated for credit by the American Council on Education (ACE) which were completed while in the Armed Forces. Please submit your official military transcript for evaluation.

A portfolio is a written description of what you’ve learned in your life or work experiences and how they equate to specific courses offered at North Country Community College.  Examples of knowledge and skills that are eligible for credit may include workforce training, registered apprenticeships, or on-the-job training.

You may need documentation such as certificates, brochures, letters of reference, and so on, to support your statements of competency, knowledge, and/or skills. Here are the steps you should take:

  1. Complete this inquiry form: Credit for Prior Learning Inquiry Form.
  2. If approval is received from a faculty member, a Portfolio application is to be completed by student and faculty member. After review, faculty will forward application and Portfolio for processing.
  3. Credits, not grades, will be awarded for your portfolio, up to a maximum of 14 credits.

Deposit: To begin the review process, students must provide a deposit of $50.00 that will be applied to cost of awarded credit once the review is complete.
